On Your First Visit

On your first visit to Dr. Power’s office, you will be asked to provide a health history as well as explain your current concerns.  Your appointment will include a private consultation, orthopedic and neurological exams, x-rays (if necessary) and will conclude with appropriate treatments.  Dr. Power  takes the time to thoroughly explain and educate his patients regarding their problems.  He is also a believer in proper nutrition and exercise, so he provides information for use at home.

For your convenience, we have provided a Health History form for you to print and fill out prior to your office visit.

After Dr. Power has assessed each patient and provided the necessary and proper adjustments he may order special treatments for supporting muscles, tissues and joints.  These may include electrical stimulation, deep heat with ultra sound, ice or heat therapy, a paraffin arthritis treatment or cold laser light therapy.

Prior to any treatment he explains what the patient can expect during the treatment, and what the outcome should be.  Therapy may include the following:

Electrical Stimulation takes away pain by contracting and fatiguing muscles and removing the waste product called lactic acid.  Electrical current causes a pulsing sensation which is  increased gradually and gently during the course of treatment as the patient adapts to the sensation.

Heat Therapy may be used during electrical stimulation as well.  Heat promotes muscle relaxation and improved blood flow.

Therapeutic Ultrasound  is considered to be a form of deep heat which increases the temperature and helps with local metabolism.  It softens the tissues, and causes an increase in local circulation.  Ultrasound is said to increase the rate of healing of certain injuries, reduce spasms in muscles, increase the range of motion when it has been lessened by adhesion and fibrosis, and break up calcified deposits.  It has been shown to increase the extensibility of tendons and it promotes tissue repair.

Cold Laser Therapy is a treatment which is non-invasive and pain free.  It is used to decrease inflammation and promote healing in a variety of conditions such as fractures, neurological and inflammatory conditions, wounds, pain syndromes, arthritis, and sports and other injuries.

Laser therapy uses light waves to penetrate through the skin’s underlying layers to the appropriate site, supplying oxygen and energy to every cell and thus promoting anti-inflammatory effects through the blood.

The major effects of laser light therapy are decreasing pain swelling, and inflammation and speeding up cell repair by stimulating the immune, lymphatic and vascular systems thus fostering a quicker healing time.  Known chronic or acute conditions which may be helped by cold laser therapy are:
